Hunting Queensland Red Deer

by Tom & Thomas Varney

When it comes to Deer hunting, it was a little later in my life before one could call himself a deer hunter. I remember around the age of 18 years old, a friend of mine with whom I played Australian Rules Football with, talked to me about the possibility of a trip to New Zealand with him to hunt Red Deer, but it only became a dream not a reality. In the meantime I had become friendly with the sons of that old time family friend. The wild dog trapper mentioned earlier, those boys were also keen Shooters.

This time my focus was on hunting the big Sambar Deer. Their Dad spending most of his time in the bush, came back into town weekends only. And as our time together became more frequent than earlier years, it was obvious these big Sambar Deer became the focus of our attention, as The Boys Dad now talked often about the Sightings of Sambar while trapping dogs. Then it happened! Not only did he sight these elusive animals, but he then began to spend time hunting them.

Later, his success hunting them was evident by the two huge trophy heads he then displayed in his lounge room. For me, circumstances changed for some years after that time, as it can with many of us I guess.

Then my next encounter with deer was in Queensland, after leaving Victoria in 1978. Having settled in Queensland near the Gold Coast, it was not long before we were looking for a little bit of Country living, and later moved 100 Kms west to where we are now, right in the middle of the Red Deer Country, and surrounded by wild Dogs. In our enthusiasm to hunt wild dogs, we also like my old dog trapper friend, seeing Sambar while trapping dogs, we had frequent sighting of the big Red Deer that Queensland produces.

And it was only a matter of time before a growing interest was soon shown by Thomas to search for a trophy head. So the Video camera now began to focus on those big Red Stags, especially in the Roaring Season, in some ways we had the best of both worlds as the saying goes.
